Checklist for moving into a new home

Planning makes moving easier

There is a lot to do, but almost none of it has to happen at once. This checklist breaks the move into small chunks by week so you can knock things out early and keep the last few days calm. Check items off as you go. Your progress stays on this device until you refresh the page.

Pre-move checklist

Eight weeks before

Start here

Get three moving quotesAsk for written, binding estimates and check what each includes. Compare full-service movers against a container or rental truck.

Set a moving budgetMovers, deposits, supplies, cleaning, and a buffer for the things nobody plans for.

Start a move fileOne folder, digital or paper, for quotes, receipts, your contract, insurance and closing documents.

Get to know the new areaSchools, grocery stores, commute times, and the closest urgent care. Lake Wylie families: ask us for local recommendations.

Request recordsMedical, dental, vet and school records take longer to transfer than you expect.

Call your insurance agentAuto and homeowners premiums both change with your address, and your new policy needs to start on closing day.

Six weeks before

Sort and schedule

Declutter room by roomSell, donate, or toss anything you have not used in a year. Fewer boxes means a cheaper move.

Eat through the freezer and pantryPlan meals around what you already own so you are not moving frozen food.

Use up cleaning productsMovers will not take bleach, aerosols or propane. Buy fresh at the new house.

Line up boxesGrocery stores, liquor stores and neighborhood groups are reliable free sources.

Book the moverPick your company and lock the date. Summer weekends fill up fast. Confirm liability coverage and packing services.

Four weeks before

Pack and notify

Pack the off-seasonHoliday decorations, winter coats, books, and anything else you will not need before the move.

Set up utilitiesElectric, gas, water, trash, and internet at the new address. Schedule shutoff at the old one for the day after you leave.

File a change of addressDo it online with the Postal Service. It takes two minutes.

Plan for petsDecide how they travel, and update their microchip and tags with the new address.

Two weeks before

Loose ends

Service your carEspecially for a long-distance move. Ask us for a mechanic referral if you are new to the area.

Update your address everywhere elseBank, credit cards, employer, DMV, IRS, subscriptions, and your voter registration.

Confirm details with the moverArrival time, contact numbers, parking, and what happens if closing runs late.

Tell friends and familyShare the new address and the move date.

The final week

Almost there

Refill prescriptionsEnough to cover the move and the first couple of weeks.

Pack an essentials boxChargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, basic tools, paper towels, snacks, and the coffee maker.

Defrost the freezerAt least 24 hours before moving day so it is dry and clean.

Drain fuel from equipmentLawn mowers, trimmers, and grills cannot be moved with fuel or propane.

Label every box by roomWrite the room and a short summary on two sides. Mark boxes that need to be opened first.

Withdraw some cashFor tips, last-minute supplies, and anything that comes up on the day.

Morning of the move

Before the truck arrives

Do a final walkthrough of the old homeCheck every closet, cabinet, drawer, attic, and the garage.

Keep the essentials box and documents with youThey ride in your car, not on the truck.

Take meter readingsPhotograph electric, gas and water meters at both houses.

Charge your phoneYou will be on it all day.

With the movers

Loading and unloading

Walk through with the crew leadPoint out fragile items and anything that stays behind.

Check the inventory listSign only after you have confirmed the item count and noted existing damage.

Keep a copy of the bill of ladingThis is your contract with the mover. Do not let the only copy leave with the truck.

Direct boxes to the right roomsYour labels do most of the work if someone stands at the door.

First night in the new home

Settle in

Set up beds firstEverything else can wait until tomorrow.

Locate the water shutoff and breaker panelBest to know before you need them.

Change the locksYou do not know how many keys the previous owner handed out.

Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectorsReplace batteries even if they seem fine.

Order dinnerAsk us for a local favorite. Consider it the first perk of living here.
